Job Description
The Technical Artist acts as a bridge between the artists, programmers and the design team. They ensure art assets can be easily integrated into a game while preserving the overall artistic vision. The also make sure assets do not exceed the technical limits the game engine. The Technical Artist works part of the art team, and coordinates closely with the lead artists and the art director, as well as with the lead programmers, the design team and production.
Main areas of responsibility for Technical Artists include setting up and maintaining the art production workflow. They are also responsible for investigating new techniques, identifying bottlenecks in the pipeline and creating and implementing solutions for the team. The job often includes an instructional element, with the Technical Artist sharing their knowledge with other artists via training and mentoring sessions.
Technical Artists also work on production assets including, but not limited to, 3d modeling rig setups, creation of game art assets and textures as well as in an advisory position, setting up the systems of production as well as solving problems as they arise. It’s crucial for the Technical Artist to keep up-to-date in changes in technology, for computer hardware specs, art packages, and new techniques. They are also expected to be able to create custom tools and scripts that improve the efficiency of their team. Knowledge of python and other scripting languages is plus for this position.
Playing a key role in providing feedback or debugging complex assets such as character skeleton rigs and skinning systems will be part of Technical Artists daily tasks. They will also research and oversee the implementation of rendering techniques and graphical effects such as normal and specular maps, particle systems, and pixel shaders while maintaining that they do not exceed the limitations of the game engine.

Specific Technical Artist Roles:
Animation -
Responsible for overseeing the 3d modeling setup and technical support for character animation throughout the production pipeline and ensuring that the method of importing assets from the art team is always optimal and does not exceed the limitations of the game engine.
Pipeline -
Responsible for development and maintenance of software tools in all areas of the production pipeline. They are also directly responsible for each and every asset that the art team creates and is implemented into the game.

Responsibilities:
· Coordinate art, engineering and design departmental overlap to ensure artists are following the latest best practices while maintaining the creative vision of each project.
· Specify and develop art production tools that meet artists' needs in order to establish, diagnose and correct content creation pipeline issues or bottlenecks.
· Maintain pipeline efficiency from art source creation to game team integration.
· Identify ways to increase efficiencies in artist workflow and production pipelines.
· Design user-friendly solutions for a variety of technical challenges.
· Provide active support with production data.

Qualifications:
· 2-year 2D/3D art degree, architecture degree, or equivalent with excellent critique and vocabulary skills. BFA or equivalent preferred.
· 2 or more years in game development (or related field – such as film or TV development).
· 2 or more years of PC art experience designing and troubleshooting art pipelines.
· Former position as a Technical Artist in a game company is highly desired.
· Solid understanding of proper workmanship involved in creating 2D and 3D art for efficiency.
· Must be an excellent and positive communicator.
· Python knowledge a plus.
